9 May 2009. A3 sends:

I have been meaning to write to congratulate you on some of the amazing information you have been posting lately. You are performing a singular and invaluable service every day.

But I also wanted to comment on something that has bubbled up to the surface of your site again - the list of people purported to be IRA members.

I believe the list is deeply flawed and that the person who wrote to you speculating that it was developed by loyalists is correct. This list bears a strong resemblance to a list titled "Know The Provo," which was posted on a website advertising the accomplishments of the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF). See the Irish American newspaper, the Irish Echo, at

http://www.irishecho.com/search/searchstory.cfm?id=7644issueid=153

I no longer have a copy of the "Know The Provo" list which I think first surfaced in the late 1990s/early 2000 on various sites.

There are several things that are repugnant about the composition of this list. I will give you some examples. One is the presence of the solicitor Padraigin Drinan who took over some clients of Rosemary Nelson after she was murdered in March 1999 by a car bomb. Nelson's murder was almost certainly the result of collusion between the LVF, the British Army and police (the Royal Ulster Constabulary). Before her death, Nelson was slandered by police simply for acting as a lawyer representing clients who had been arrested under the emergency powers legislation. A small percentage of her clients were people who were accused of being members of the IRA. Similarly to the list you published, I also recall that Drinan was the only person on the "Know The Provo" list whose address and telephone number were shown. At the time of the publication of the "Know the Provo" list, shortly after Nelson's murder, Drinan's presence on the list was seen by many as a particularly menacing threat to a person who is not a member of the IRA, but merely a lawyer offering representation to people in a human rights context. In another example from this list which would lead one to think it was developed by loyalists with a fundamentalist anti-Catholic ideology, the reference to the pregnancy of Roisin McAliskey as being "bred," is a usage which is clearly a racialized demeaning of Catholics.

I offer this information to you for what it is worth.

I don't know your policies about quoting from e-mail which you have received, but if you are interested in quoting in any portion of this, I would prefer that you keep my name out of it. But, obviously, it's your website and so it's your call.

Cryptome:

Your note has been added to the file. Whatever leads you to fancy the source would be given to you, a total stranger capable of lying in your teeth by notoriously deceitful googlemail, are you daft or a joker? Mark Cleary is not well served by the prank should he know about it.

A:

Mark Cleary is my [relative] and we found this while googling our names. I find your reply offensive to a simple query. I am neither daft or a joker.  The information you are hosting on your website can be of use to Loyalist terrorists in Northern Ireland and as you are content to host inaccurate and potentially fatal information on your website then you are responsible, because it is hosted in the USA, I will be complaining to the hosting company about the content and also to the US department of Homeland Security because the content you are hosting contains addresses of individuals.

Cryptome:

You must be unaware of the purpose of Cryptome which is to publish the type of information you wish to have removed. You believe what you say, others differ. We support the difference. Your view has been added to the file, and that constructive disagreement is what the site hopes to foster. Demands to the hosting service and the government are welcomed as part of the debate. They are made regularly.

7 May 2009. A sends:

You are the registered owner of the above domain on which is hosted information on Mark Cleary which states that he is an IRA member.  This information is factually incorrect, Mark has never been convicted of membership of any proscribed organistation.

Could you please forward the source of the information you have hosted on your site?

25 May 2006. Name of John Hume deleted in response to A who writes:

I view your site as a valuable source of information that is widely suppressed, frequently without any justification. For this reason I would praise you.

I live in the city of Derry aka londonderry in Northern Ireland. Today I was looking at this:

http://cryptome.quintessenz.org/mirror/ira-names.htm

And I am not happy about some of the information contained in the file.

The 'IRA mebers list' seems to have been taken from a loyalist website and necessarily unreliable.

I would compare it to trusting a list of Black Panther members submitted by the KKK!

It names John Hume as an IRA member. To quote Wikipedia "he is the only person in history to have won the three biggest peace awards in the world, Nobel Peace Prize, Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Award."

I know for a fact he has no involvement with that organisation.

Why are you publishing this information that is utterly absurd and demonstrably false. It makes the whole site look dubious by association.

19 January 2005. The alleged IRA member list below should be matched with a list of members of its Loyalist opposition. There apparently are lists of paramilitaries from both sides. Send lists or pointers to jya@pipeline.com

A. writes:

All this posturing about the ethics of publishing alleged IRA members in Dundalk is somewhat late in the day, considering this far more damaging list has been about for some time (original page yanked):
